Becoming a Painter

On the advice of my good friend and painter Kelly Reemtsen, I have been painting like crazy!  I just completed 7 paintings of my new series of desert plants.  Here is a look at what I’ve got in the works… much more to come.

Succulent Paint

Today I completed a painting from a photo taken in my garden. I started the painting a few months ago before I moved.  I just got my painting studio set up at the new house and finally got back to it this morning.  It’s hard not to be inspired when you are working from the tree tops with a view… so serene.

Painting succulents presents an interesting challenge in color and tone. So many rich colors and reflected light that make them so beautiful but not so easy to communicate on canvas. This is the first of many to come with similar subject matter. I’ve had a fascination with succulents over the last few years…I see them, I want them, I stop to admire them, I plant them, I grow them, I trade their little pups with friends, I study their shapes and colors ….I love them so much I want to eat them!  Not really, I just can’t get enough of them!  I absolutely love them in a garden and when I was trying to come up with what to paint, it just felt right to use them as my subject. While I’m planning on painting them in oil, I also want to experiment with some pastel as well. I hope you enjoy it!
